You and AI, editing the same timeline.

Open Cut Pro is a free, open-source video editor for Mac. Describe the edit you want, watch it land on a real timeline, then trim, restyle or undo any of it by hand.

Apple silicon Mac on macOS 26. AI editing uses your own Claude Code or Codex sign-in. Manual editing needs neither.

One session, from a folder of footage to a finished file.

The agent edits with the same commands you do. Nothing it does is hidden, and nothing you do gets overwritten.

1. Import

Drop in a folder. The app reads it so you do not have to.

Every clip gets a transcript with word timings, a shot list, faces, framing and loudness. You and the agent search the same index, by words said, by who is on screen, or by what has not been used yet.

2. Ask

Say what you want in plain words.

The cut appears on the timeline as it is made, clip by clip. The chat lists each step as an editing action you can read, and you can stop at any point.

“Cut this down to about two minutes. Keep the part about moving the shop.”

3. Adjust

Change anything by hand.

Trim a cut, swap a shot, drag a caption. These are ordinary editing tools, not a review screen. The agent's next request starts from your version of the timeline, not from its own.

4. Continue

Ask for the next change. It picks up where you left off.

Captions, music under the voice, a different ending. Each request is one undo step, so a change you do not like disappears in one keystroke and your own edits stay.

“Add captions and bring the music down under her voice.”

5. Export

Export for the destination, or hand off to another editor.

Presets for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X and Vimeo, plus ProRes masters. Captions burn in or ship as a sidecar file. The agent checks frames and audio levels on the export before it tells you it is done.

Three kinds of video, one editor.

Each example will show the brief, the footage that went in, what the agent did and what was changed by hand.

Interview

A twenty-minute conversation cut to two, with cutaways over the joins and captions from the transcript.

Brief
Keep the story about moving the shop
By hand
One trim, one swapped shot

Product ad

A fifteen-second ad from product footage, cut to the music, delivered as 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 variants that share their text.

Brief
Spring launch, three formats
By hand
Moved the logo, changed the end card

Montage

Travel footage cut to a track, with the agent choosing shots from the index and placing cuts on the beat grid.

Brief
Ninety seconds, hold the drone shot
By hand
Reordered two shots

A full editor, not a prompt box.

Blade, trim, ripple, roll, slip and slide. Speed ramps, multicam, keyframes, color, transitions, titles and captions. The agent can use all of it, and so can you.

Trim like you always have

Magnetic main track with free tracks above and below. Turn rippling off per project if you prefer Premiere-style gaps.

Captions from the transcript

Word-level timing, six styles, per-aspect placement and a face-avoidance option. Edit the text without touching the timing.

Music that gets out of the way

Roles on every clip. Music ducks under dialogue and voiceover by rule, and exports are normalized to the destination's loudness target.

Undo a whole request

Every request is one step in the undo history, alongside your own edits. Revert the agent's change and keep yours, or the other way round.

When you change something after the agent's last edit, it reads the new state before it continues. An edit against a stale version is refused, so your work is never silently replaced.

Why this editor

Built for the Mac

A native Swift app on Apple's media frameworks. One pipeline renders the preview and the export, so what you see is what you get. Transcription runs on the Mac with Apple's on-device speech models.

Your AI plan, your choice

Sign in with Claude Code or Codex through the official flow. No API keys, no middleman account, no separate bill. A terminal session can work on the same project, and its edits appear in the app's activity feed.

Knows how to edit before you ask

The agent arrives with editorial knowledge: when a pause should stay, how to cover a jump cut, how long a caption needs on screen. Six bundled skills cover the common jobs, and you can add your own.

  • Interview edit
  • Talking-head cleanup
  • Social ad with aspect variants
  • Hero montage
  • B-roll coverage
  • Captions

Open source, MIT licensed

Read how every edit is made. Skills use the public Agent Skills format, so one written for another tool works here. The editor stays free; there is no paid tier hiding features.

Finish here or somewhere else.

Export an editable timeline to the tools you already use. Before exporting, the app tells you which items arrive as editable layers and which arrive rendered. Timelines from Final Cut Pro import too.

Final Cut ProPremiere ProDaVinci Resolve

Through FCPXML and Final Cut 7 XML. Rendered export in H.264, HEVC, ProRes 422 and 4444, or a PNG sequence.

Requirements and answers

What is free?

The whole editor, with every tool on this page, under the MIT License. There is no paid version. The only cost is the AI plan you already have, if you use one.

What do I need to run it?

A Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 26. For AI editing, a Claude or ChatGPT plan that includes Claude Code or Codex; the app installs the official tool if it is missing and runs its sign-in. Manual editing works without any plan.

What leaves my Mac?

Importing, indexing, transcription, playback and export happen on the Mac. When you ask the agent for an edit, the request and the project information it reads, including transcript text and any frames it asks to see, go to the provider you signed in with, under that provider's terms. Nothing is sent to us. The app has no accounts and no analytics.

What can I import and export?

Video and audio the Mac can play, including HDR sources, which are tone-mapped to SDR with a notice. Caption files as SRT and VTT. Editable timelines as FCPXML. Export presets for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X and Vimeo, ProRes masters, custom H.264, HEVC and ProRes, and PNG sequences. Output is SDR in the first release.

Can I use it with my own footage already in another editor?

Yes. Import the FCPXML from Final Cut Pro, relink the media and keep working. Resolve can export FCPXML; Premiere timelines come across as Final Cut 7 XML. Unsupported items are listed in the import report rather than dropped silently.

When can I download it?

The app is in development and has no release date. The first release will be a notarized download for Mac, with a Homebrew cask and in-app updates. Windows is not planned for the first release.

Edit with help, not on autopilot.

When the first build is ready, it will be a free download on this page for Apple silicon Macs.
